How Often Does My Ford Need New Tires?
We recommend a tire inspection during regular maintenance appointments or if you notice anything wrong. That's because the wear rate depends on a wide range of factors. While most tires are rated to last around three to five years, the way you drive, the weather, road conditions, and more can cause your tires to wear at different rates. Selecting the right tires and keeping up with maintenance like tire rotations, balancing, and wheel alignments can help extend the life of your tires.
Signs It's Time for New Tires
Thankfully, checking your tires and determining when you need a replacement is as easy as a quick visual inspection or watching for the following signs:
- Low tread or bald tires
- Any visible damage like tears, punctures, or cracking
- Age of tires (no more than ten years old even if visibly ok)
- Poor handling, fuel efficiency, or stopping power
Why Is Tire Replacement So Important?
Tire health impacts everything from safety to fuel efficiency and performance. Ensure your tires are in good shape with regular checkups and enjoy the following benefits:
- Enhanced safety and stopping power
- Improved fuel efficiency
- Improved handling
- Exceptional grip and performance
Stopping Power
The right tread depth is critical for adequate stopping power. The ideal tread depth is at least 10/32 inches, enough to cover Lincoln's head if you insert a penny upside down at different locations along your tires. At 4/32 inches, the average stopping distance increases to 8.4 car lengths, and 2/32 inches increases the stopping distance even further to 9.8 car lengths, creating a dangerous situation where your vehicle is slow to stop and greatly increases the risk of collisions.
